RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
